Qualifications to Become a Certified USPCA Judge

Certified Regional Police Dog I Judge (Patrol)
Certified Regional Police Dog II Judge (Tracking)
Certified Regional Judge of Detector Canines

Certified Regional Police Dog I Judge (Patrol)


1. Must be a member in good standing of the USPCA.

2. Must have handled or trained a canine that has achieved Police Dog I certification at a sanctioned certification trial.

3. Must judge at least two Regional Certification Trials covering all phases. Phases include: Obedience, Agility, Evidence and Suspect Search, and all phases of Criminal Apprehension.

4. Must judge at least 35 teams (man/dog) in every phase.

5. Once the above requirements have been met, submit an application to your Regional Executive Board for approval or disapproval.

6. The application must be signed by the Regional President and one other Regional Officer. It will then be forwarded to the National Secretary for distribution to the National Judges Committee no later than 90 days prior to the next scheduled Executive Board Meeting.

7. The National Judges Committee will review the application and make a recommendation to the National Executive Board for approval or disapproval. If approved, the applicant will receive a certificate designating him/her as a Regionally Certified Police Dog 1 Judge.    ( Back to Top )


Certified Regional Police Dog II Judge (Tracking)


1. Must be a member in good standing of the USPCA.

2. Must have handled or trained a canine that has achieved Police Dog II certification at a sanctioned certification trial.

3. Must judge at least two Regional Certification Tracking Trials.

4. Must judge at least 35 teams (man/dog).

5. Once the above requirements have been met, submit an application to your Regional Executive Board for approval or disapproval. You must also submit a resume with your application showing three years experience handling or training tracking canines.

6. The application must be signed by the Regional President and one other Regional Officer. It will then be forwarded to the National Secretary for distribution to the National Judges Committee no later than 90 days prior to the next scheduled Executive Board Meeting.

7. The National Judges Committee will review the application and make a recommendation to the National Executive Board for approval or disapproval. If approved, the applicant will receive a certificate designating him/her as a Regionally Certified Police Dog 2 Judge.     ( Back to Top )


Certified Regional Judge of Detector Canines


1. Must be a member in good standing of the USPCA.

2. Must have handled or trained a canine that has achieved 'Detector Certified' at a sanctioned certification trial.

3. Must judge at least two Regional Certification Detector Trials.

4. Must judge at least 35 teams (man/dog) in both Inside and Outside phases.

5. Once the above requirements have been met, submit an application to your Regional Executive Board for approval or disapproval. You must also submit a resume with your application showing at least one year's experience handling or training detector canines.

6. The application must be signed by the Regional President and one other Regional Officer. It will then be forwarded to the National Secretary for distribution to the National Judges Committee no later than 90 days prior to the next scheduled Executive Board Meeting.

7. The National Judges Committee will review the application and make a recommendation to the National Executive Board for approval or disapproval. If approved, the applicant will receive a certificate designating him/her as a Regionally Certified Detector Judge.     ( Back to Top )
